# Proxmark 5

## Device Background
The Proxmark 5 is now publicly available, featuring improved performance, modular antenna system and dramatically improved hardware. As of September 2026, firmware is still in beta, but the hardware platform supports standalone mode, wireless mode, relay linking and Flipper Zero support.

The RDV4 it replaces was released in 2018. The Proxmark 5 does the same job as its predecessors (reading, writing, emulating, sniffing and cracking LF and HF RFID) on new hardware. In Lab401's benchmarks, RFID operations run at least 65% faster than on the Proxmark 3.

The device was funded through an Indiegogo campaign in 2026 and is now on general sale. Its firmware is developed in the RFID Research Group (RRG) [`proxmark3` repository](https://github.com/RfidResearchGroup/proxmark3), and one client handles both the Proxmark 3 and the Proxmark 5.

!! **Pre-release firmware.** The Proxmark 5 firmware is under active development and still unstable. If you need stable firmware today, buy the [Proxmark 3 RDV4](/proxmark-3-hardware/proxmark-3-rdv4). If you want the new hardware and are comfortable building firmware from source, buy the Proxmark 5.

What the Proxmark 5 changes:
 - **New core**: an AT32F435 Cortex-M4 at 288MHz and a Gowin FPGA replace the Proxmark 3's SAM7S512 and its FPGA.
 - **Hot-swappable antennas**: the LF and HF antennas clip on and off, and the drive power adjusts automatically. Lab401 credits this with longer read range and more stable coupling.
 - **Wider LF range**: the LF antenna tunes to 5 points between 125kHz and 500kHz, listed in the specification below.
 - **Wireless and battery module**: an optional drop-in module adds WiFi, Bluetooth and a battery for stand-alone and mobile audits (not yet supported by the firmware).
 - **Relay between two devices**: two Proxmark 5 units can be paired so that one reads a card while the other presents it to a reader (not yet supported by the firmware).
 - **Expansion**: 2 USB-C ports and a 10-pin GPIO header on the board, plus a Flipper Zero transfer module in the box.
 - **Frequency detector**: antenna LEDs show whether an LF or HF field is present before you run a command.

 - 2x USB-C ports: a standard port for the host computer, and a Type-C Extended Port for the Flipper Zero transfer module, SPI, UART and external mass storage
 - Boot mode and DFU mode are entered by holding the button while plugging in, so the device can be reflashed or recovered without a JTAG programmer
 - With the wireless and battery module fitted, a short press of the button powers the device on and a long press powers it off
